The giant spider crab-or Macrocheira kampfero-is undoubtedly the king of crustaceans. This nightmarish creature, who lives in the waters off the Ryukyu Islands southwest of japan, stands three feet high and often weight as much as thirty pounds. His powerful legs can spread wide as twelve feet, and his savage claws have torn flesh from men who have challenged him.
During the day, the spider crab lurks deep in his ocean home, but when the sun sets, he clambers ashore and ambles along the beach, looking like a grotesque creature from another planet. Japanese fisher men capture him with Huge nets, and it often takes several men to hold the net once this monster has been snagged.
