Albert Einstein, the genius physicist whose theories changed our ideas of how the universe works, died 55 years ago, on April 18, 1955, of heart failure. He was 76. His funeral and cremation were intensely private affairs, and only one photographer managed to capture the events of that extraordinary day: LIFE magazine's Ralph Morse. Armed with his camera and a case of scotch -- to open doors and loosen tongues -- Morse compiled a quietly intense record of an icon's passing. But aside from one now-famous image (above), the pictures Morse took that day were never published. At the request of Einstein's son, who asked that the family's privacy be respected while they mourned, LIFE decided not to run the full story, and for 55 years Morse's photographs lay unseen and forgotten. See the pictures here: http://www.life.com/image/ugc1039332/in ... stein-died

I have read a lot about his desk, nearly every physics book I read mentions it, I even heard them talk about in in mounirs documentary at the 10th dimension post. Great to see it now for real

there probably is a lot of interesting papers on that desk.

His greatest work lay on it, the unfinished theory of everything. I wonder if he would have found it, given the time.

we can only wonder, some scientists say he would, others say he wasted his time finding something impossible.

Well I do believe that the theory is there, and he also calculated great things that we now only start to prove by observation. I'm not sure if he could have done it, but I am sure that he would have brought many more theories if he had 40 more years.

Immortality = E=MC2 This single equation is one which is recognized by all generation has become a permanent fixture in society. I'm not sure how much further he would have gotten, he began to hit the peak of his ability near the end of his era. Einstein refused to accept quantum theory which is an integral part of physics today, instead focusing on his own idea of unification. This idea would not be possible without other theories from those he opposed in the 50's like string theory. Einstein was also wrong about the universe due to a lack of information as he believed it went forever, something the current smartest man alive Stephen Hawking has disproved. While he may have been wrong on a few thing he was still ahead of his time during his rise in the scientific community. His theory of relativity changed everything and he revolutionized the world with his ideas. Very few scientists are unique enough to live on in pop culture and the name 'Einstein' is recognized by all generations of people now. He was the basis for many movie scientists including Doc Emmet Brown from 'Back to the Future'. He left a truly enduring legacy and still lives on in our world today.

Amusingly enough, it is a simplified equation of energy, concerning motion and conversion of mass to energy.

E = MC2 was a milastone for sure, but not the biggest or anything, just the most well known.

um wasn't Einstein the one who thought of string theory?
And didn't he work in a patent office?.... makes you think...

No. He just stated the Theory of Relativity. The String Theory is like a connection between Quantum Mechanics and the Theory of Relativity.
