of what i know DNA lasts pretty long, if not eternal, depending on the circumstances.
they have been able to extract DNA from even 10.000 year old fossils.

but there are some key genes that are always the same or very similiar, if you can find and compare, you can track back.

but if you do it in small steps, it's possible
altough, with every step the probability of it being correct decreases, so it's disputable.
