What is the major difference between a scientific calculator and a financial calculator? i have a t-83 scientific calculator, but i was told by my finance professor that i would need a financial calculator. i looked at what my t-83 can do, and it says business and finance. would that calculator be ok to use as oppose to buying a different calculator?

I'm not entirely sure but I watched my cousin use one once and he was able to plug a couple of numbers in and the calculator spat out the interest rate. Also, I'm sure that your tests will be regulated as to which calculator you're allowed to use.

for what i know, some scientific calculators have certain scientific formulas and characters built-in. as well particular ways of calculating and displaying them.

depends on what you need it for, if it's for highschool, they're probably both fine.

university i dont know, others here do

Uum it depends on what the financial calculator is supposed to do.
I know that TI's are very broad and powerful calculators, and probably are capable of doing everything you want. But it is possible that they lack a few buttons that calculate some special financial stuff, but if you know what the buttons do (which is good to know :P) you can just do the calculations. Also, you can write a BASIC script that does that calculation for you. (so add programs/apps to it)
I can help with some basic, BASIC scripts, if you tell me what they need to do, etc.

EDIT: I just googled the financial calculator, and they pretty-much are simple TI's

So by what I can tell, the TI-84/83 has all these functions. But they may be hidden away a bit better :P

like ncr and npr are under a submenu. (On my TI-84, they are under the MATH button and then the PRB tab. So first column, 3rd button and then press right 3 times.)

If you have any more questions, then please ask :P
