Well, nowadays when holding a weapon in videogames you hold the weapon with the rifle butt to the right or left side. Doom, being one of the first 3d shooters, did not have this. The had the weapon in the middle, programming probably. Thats why the mother of all shooters looks like this, and later games don;t

Thats somply because most people are right handen SOme games allow switchovers, where the butt is to the right. Probably to freeup the corner, or people who prefer seeing it left:P
