Time-lag? I don't think so. There's something in General Relativity called a closed timelike curve, in which an observer can return to his/her starting point in spacetime, and thereby concievably travel through time. However, objects traveling in a closed timelike curve behave exactly like ordinary objects, and do not become "ghostlike". Also, if ghosts are time-delayed versions of real things, why don't people claim to see ghosts of inanimate objects like houses or trees? Instead, people only claim to see ghosts of people. This, combined with a lack of evidence for ghosts of any kind leads me to believe that they are entirely a figment of the imagination.
In other words: no.

Yeah, despite of the fact that my general relativity isn't that good, I do think you got a point there. I agree that ghosts are a figment of our imagination, but they are a very sophisticated figment of out imagination nevertheless.

TheBoss: I independently came up with basically the same theory in November 2010: "Ghosts are intersections of time." (apparently, I was not first ... damnit! lol) Not much of a scientific theory, but more of a conceptual framing of the phenomenon of "ghosts" that gives some direction (finally) to "ghost" research and theoretical development.
To those who say that ghosts are figments of the imagination: You don't have to have conclusions about everything. I think it's usually more rational not to form conclusions while there are things that cannot be explained.

Ghost stories are made for that, they are supposed to be scary. If they aren't, then who would want to hear them?
I agree that it's more rational not to form a definite judgment on ghosts, but I do think that it is highly unlikely that ghosts exist

There's absolutely no record of anyone encountering a ghost that didn't scare them.
Besides, "ghost" as a concept has been around for hundreds of years. They were a form of control. For example "Don't go into those woods, Jimmy, or the wolfmen may get you."
Nowadays we have religion.

Religion has always been a good way of keeping the normal people in check - reason is a good way as well, but somehow there isn't a single politician in favor of that
