But, supposing it really is alien, why would they use such a symbol with such a distinctive meaning on earth? Isn't that a little weird?

Makes perfect sense actually. I do believe they were here before man even showed up on this planet, and may have even interacted with ancient civilizations. Think about who the gods were these civilizations worshiped and sacrificed to. If you think about what the owl stands for, it becomes clear they have their own idea about religion / spirituality. Perhaps this is a way of saying they seek to show us a new path.

But, if they want to show this new way to us, why try to communicate it using something as ambiguous as a crop circle?
